blogging again
My kid wants me to blog again, so here we go. My intent awhile back was to put together a zine with the same energy i threw into blogging twenty years ago. I keep looking up subjects to read instead.

Firing up one of the backup blogs out of spite seems healthy. A blog i still read on the rare occasion I'm not glued to Twitter mentioned that the Vulture wrote a piece on the ending of the Millions, a book blog that never covered much I cared about. It wasn't indie.
I finally read this week's Warren Ellis newsletter too. He riffs on something someone else coined with Elder Blogging. It sounds bullshit to me. It's only a framing of what happened before by how those who once immersed themselves in that medium now see it. It's blogging.
My first website was in 1994 & it was half-assed reviews of albums I loved & hated and promoting local bands. It went from the university site to Geocities years later. It took years beyond that to admit what I was doing was blogging & do it properly, with internal links & such. The database of that site is still on some flashdrives haunting me.
I've been toying with doing zines again, but when I reached out to contribute something to one of the Street Fight zines, following through with even a secondary contact was too much to muster. One of my friends at work does zines down in New Orleans these days, with positive response. There are even release parties. Writing another Fugue would be fun,but would it be fun to worrying if anyone would read it? Probably not. Sending missives into the void is more my style. Blogging.
Twitter is okay for gathering news, but my once-eclectic timeline is muddied with extremely political material. That's not a bad thing, but my focus on the world has narrowed immensely & my memory of recent events is regularly lost to the new big story. Making connections without the help of others is tricky. I ache more physically & i've broken my brain with Twitter's ephemeral perpetual outrage & mockery, but blogging always gave more satisfaction.
Here we go. It probably won't last very long.

Orbis Quintus is back on Wordpress, the archive of posts is up, and so are the comments. The categories are missing, but to hell with them. I'll retag them in the coming months. The search engine works just fine for digging up old articles.
Don't pay any mind to that badgerminor.net URL that the site defaults to. That's going away. I'll fix it later. I've felt like garbage all day, but managed to sludge my way through uploading most of the database bit by bit.
Yep. Only six months late....

Tom has put up a bunch of old links on Freaky Trigger, revisiting a strange Golden Age of music and culture blogging from the turn of the millennium. I quite miss it actually, even in this day of RSS feeds of hundreds of blogs. There are quite a few blogs and sites that seem to be missing on there, but it's going to take awhile to see what he missed, although most of it seems to be revolving around the NYLPM axis. Hopefully i have an old bookmark file stowed away.
I only started blogging in the aftermath of that, in 2000, during the election recount. For a few years before that, i'd been putting music fansites up every few weeks. The blogging thing didn't make a connection until later. My old site was Fighting Against Making the Pie Higher. Until a couple of weeks ago, i wasn't even sure if it was still online. I didn't look it up out of embarrassment.
No matter how much any of it makes me wince, it will be rescued.
The real Orbis Quintus must come back soon too. Blogger ain't my style. Wordpress is missed immensely.

It's over on the sidebar. Don't know if i will use it that much. Currently the only thing over there was a months old post on '70s bands on MySpace that i meant to star, not share.
Not doing too good on that Wordpress project, eh? If you had to create maps in Excel spreadsheets all day, you'd get bored with that nonsense too.

Not quite. I've gone through so many fallow periods since 2000, that they're rather hard to keep track of. However, it sunk in that this blogger site has been up for far too long, and it doesn't really feel like home. I keep promising to assemble the Wordpress site, but it's been hell paring down that database from all of the spam. At this point, i'm missing the ancient pure HTML site from Geocities.
To hell with this. I must put up a brand new blog in Wordpress, lest i forget why this format was useful in the first place.
